Course requirements for the Defensive Driving Courses in New York State:

1. Eligibility:

   • All renewing driver license applicants, including TLC Driver License, Commuter Van, and Paratransit License applicants, must complete a New York State Department of Motor Vehicle (NYS DMV) certified six (6) hour Defensive Driving Course (DDC).
   • The course cannot be older than three (3) years before your license expiration date.

2. Course Duration:

   • The classroom course is 320 minutes long.
   • It is presented in one or more sessions.
   • The course must include essential information about traffic safety, covering topics such as driver attitude and behavior, defensive driving techniques, and the Vehicle & Traffic Law.
   • No formal testing is required to complete the course.

3. Insurance Rate Reduction:

   • 4 points are ‘subtracted’ for the purposes of calculating a suspension if you have 11 or more points.
